5th Grade Championship
Breakers Falls
Sheboygan Breakers 1st Place Sheboygan Falls 2nd Place
Breakers 12 Falls 6
The Breakers came in knowing it would be a tough game to win as the Falls boys had taken three of four from us in the regular season. Both teams were clearly pumped for the game and ready to play.  After a few innings it became clear that it would be a tight game.  By the middle innings, however, the Breakers offense began to put the game away.  Our pitchers, one through three, were strong and held a formidable Falls offense to six runs to seal the deal and the Breakers went on to win it all in their inaugural season!  What a great year.
5 & 6 Grade Championship

Last year I took a few holdovers from my REMAX Grey Junior League team and combined them with "8" new 5th and 6th graders out of our Junior program and entered the Lakeshore League 6th Grade Division. That group went 9-5, splitting 4th place with Port Washington and heartbreakingly lost the tie-breaker thus just missing the play-offs.
Fast-forward to 2010. (7) of those 5th graders plus five new 6th graders out of the Junior League were drafted forming the 2010 Plymouth White Panthers 6th grade Lakeshore team. My two assistants, Aaron Chorowicz from Kohler and Chris Schneider along with myself, started practice in mid-April. From a distance, one could see we were a team of small, well-mannered, good natured kids. But up close, the (3) of us knew we had much more. Sporting a season ending overall record of 18-2, 13-1 in Lakeshore League play and two more big play-off wins, this group accomplished so much more than a 2010 League title, we can only walk away with nothing but great, life-long memories.
This group of (12) boys displayed a full and complete picture of what solid, disciplined, scrappy, and unselfish play can get you. Of the (18) wins, only three were via the 10-run rule. What that meant was that if you were going to beat this group, you needed to play a mistake-free game (as Port and Kiel) did; and then still hang on at the end. For the season this Team averaged a miniscule 1.2 errors per (7) inning game. All (12) players played a role in the team's success as when one boy would have a bad game, three more were right there to pick up the slack. For the season, Plymouth White 6th allowed an average of 3.2 runs per game, almost unheard of for a Team that was not loaded with a big pile of all-star studs. Just (12) boys who always played the game the way it is supposed to be played. Pitchers threw strikes, not just strike-outs. Fielders made plays, not errors. Players gave 100%, not 80 or 90, or sometimes 100. Base runners were smart, taking the extra base whenever the opponent wasn't looking. Throughout the first half of the season, runs were manufactured, and not always plentiful. But when a team plays defense the way these boys did, not many was almost always good enough. It is hard for me to mention names with stats, even though I have them right in front of me, that just is not how this group won games and succeed. But as the season concluded and the games became bigger and more important, the hitting came, yet the fielding, pitching, and solid fundamental play never left. I would like to thank all of the parents of these boys and my coaches for a season-long, rewarding experience that I will not soon forget. With the season now complete, I know these boys have accomplished a lot and grew as baseball players. However, playing the game is what really matters; playing well, succeeding, and a 1st place medal are all just huge bonus'. Thanks again for (4) months of sheer pleasure and fulfillment, and allowing me to spend time with your boys.

Here are a few high-lights of Plymouth White 6th grade Cadets two play-off wins:

GAME #1 - Port Washington vs. Plymouth White

Plymouth came into the game 13-1 and the #1 overall seed with Port 10-4 (giving White their only loss) and the #4 seed. Port came out smoking scoring "2" quick runs but had the bases loaded with no outs and failed to score more. White went a quick 1-2-3, but things would soon change. Collin Meyer and Samuel Staehling shut down the potent Port offense giving up zero runs on just (2) hits thru five innings as White exploded for (9) runs in the 2nd, one in the 3rd and (3) more in the 4th. After a mere 1 hour and 12 minutes, Port was heading home. Samuel Staehling and Ian Eickhoff homered and Cole Henning went 3-3. Ian McConaha added (2) hits and scored (3).   Final score: Ply. White 13 - Port 2 in 4 1/2 innings.

GAME #2 - Sheboygan Falls vs. Plymouth White

As expected, Jim Madden had his Falcons playing at a very aggressive level. But even after jumping on White 4-1 after two innings, they could not hold off the hard-charging White Panthers as they made it 4-3 after (3) then tying it up at (4) after (4). White then added two more in the 5th to close it out 6-4. True to form, White committed zero errors once again plus throwing out a Falcon runner at 3rd base and two more at home. White just kept making play after play in the field as Falls continued to pound away at White's brick wall defense. Collin Meyer shut down the Falls bats in innings #4 - #6 and then Samuel Staehling came in to slam the door shut striking out the side in the 7th. Michael Chorowicz nailed a solo homer in the bottom of the 1st and finished with (3) hits. Staehling added two more as White out-hit Falls 10 to 5. Final score: Ply. White 6 - Sheboygan Falls 4.

7th Grade Championship
Bandits Ply
Sheboygan Bandits 1st Place Plymouth Black 2nd Place
Bandits 8 Plymouth 2

Finally a perfect night for a game ~~ warm and dry!  A very nice crowd enjoyed an exciting ball game with many highlight plays.
The Bandits started the first inning with a leadoff walk from Kyle Burgard.  He scored on 1B by Matt Miller.  He took third base on a deep 2B by Dillon Oostdyke.  They both scored on a line drive by Eric Frank.  He was knocked in by Brady Hanson, and the score was 4-0 after ½  inning.

Plymouth threatened in the bottom of the first.  With 2 on and 1 out Tyler Willeford launched an 0-2 change-up from Matt Miller to right.  Alex Griessmeyer tracked it down as it came down from above the lights, and made the catch of the game on the warning track. The inning ended without any runs scoring, and the score still 4-0.

Plymouth stranded a runner in the second & third innings.  Carson Bieber led off the Bandits third inning with a BB, and was knocked in by Matt Miller.  He scored on a fielders-choice by Dillon Oostdyke.  The score was 6-0.

Nick Casper scored a run for Plymouth in the 4th on a 1B by Anthony Jetzer.  Matt Miller finished his 4th inning giving up only 3 hits, two BB, and 1 run.

Dillon Oostdyke was now pitching for the Bandits, and Tyler Willeford for Plymouth.  Both pitched a scoreless 5th inning.  The score was still 6-1 entering the 6th inning.  Matt Miller and Dillon Oostdyke both scored in the inning before Tyler Willeford struck-out the side.  Drew Schweiger scored for Plymouth in the bottom of the 6th when has was forced in on a BB to Zach Gambrell.  The score 8-2 at the end of the 6th.

After hitting a 3B  to center, Tyler Willeford scored 1 more run for Plymouth in the last inning on a squeeze bunt by Cole Karczewski.
The line for Dillon Oostdyke after his 3 innings of work was 3H, 3BB, 7SO, 2 runs.  The final score of the 2010 championship game was 8-3 Sheboygan
Bandits.

8th Grade Championship
Falls Plymouth
Sheboygan Falls 1st Place Plymouth Black 2nd Place
Sheboygan Falls 5 Plymouth 4 (8) innings

The Sheboygan Falls eighth grade Lakeshore League baseball team completed a successful 2010 season by defeating a well prepared and coach Plymouth Black team July 25, 2010 at Carl Loebe Field in Plymouth.  The game was marked by excellent pitching through the first six innings, as only 1 run was scored.  In the last inning Plymouth scored an insurance run to take a 2 – 0 lead after six and one half innings.  In the bottom of the seventh though, Sheboygan Falls was able to score two runs to tie the game at 2.  In the top of the eighth inning Plymouth loaded the bases with no outs.  Sheboygan Falls was able to induce a ground ball to the shortstop and get a force out at home to keep a run from scoring.  Plymouth now had bases loaded with one out.  The next Plymouth batter hit a fly ball to the left-center gap scoring the runner from third.  As the runner from second was attempting to score Sheboygan Falls executed an excellent relay from the center fielder to the shortstop to the catcher to get the runner out.  With a one run lead Plymouth now had runners on second and third with two outs and their next two batters were able to work the count, earn walks and scored another run.  Plymouth had a two run lead, bases loaded, and two outs.  Sheboygan Falls was able to get a ground ball to the first baseman to record the third and final out.  In the bottom of the eighth inning Sheboygan Falls was able to get their first three batters on base safely.  Falls had bases loaded with no outs.  The Plymouth pitcher was able to strike out the next two Falls batters.  Down two runs with bases loaded and two outs the Sheboygan Falls batter was able to work the count to 2 balls and 2 strikes.  On the fifth pitch of the at bat a long fly ball was hit to the left center and it dropped in.  The runners on second and third scored easily to tie the game.  The runner from first never slowed down around the bases, was able to slide around the catcher to beat out an excellently executed relay by Plymouth Black to score the game winning run and earn Sheboygan Falls the 8th grade Lakeshore League Championship.

9th Grade League Proposed

Lakeshorebaseball is considering adding a ninth grade baseball league for this 2011 season. Any teams that are interested in putting together some type of 9th grade team for the 2011 season please contact me. I have talked to several of the teams in the area that currently have a 8th Grade & 9th grade teams and would consider adding a ninth grade team if one were available please contact me if you're interested. This is the time of the year that we need to start talking about something like this if we are truly going to add a new league to our existing leagues

Baseball Rules Change Puts Moratorium on Composite Bats 2011 Season

Baseball Rules Change Puts Moratorium on Composite Bats

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                      Contact: Elliot Hopkins

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (July 7, 2010) — One of six new rules changes by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Baseball Rules Committee forbids the use of composite bats until they can meet the Batted Ball Coefficient of Restitution (BBCOR) performance standard. The changes, which were subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors, will take effect with the 2010-11 school year.

After thorough testing by the Baseball Research Center at the University of Massachusetts–Lowell, the NFHS Baseball Rules Committee voted to outlaw composite bats until they can produce consistent results through the life of the bat, be made tamper-evident and be labeled as a composite product.

Elliot Hopkins, NFHS liaison to the Baseball Rules Committee, visited with James Sherwood, director of the Baseball Research Center, and spent several hours witnessing composite bat testing. “Rolling the bat gives it a higher performance,” Hopkins said. “It can significantly increase the performance and that’s huge in our game.”

Rolling the bat isn’t the only problem. Rolling only speeds up the performance enhancement that would occur over time after normal use. Even composite bats that were not altered will eventually see this increase in performance, and the rules committee views that as a major concern.

Rule 1-3-2 through 5 was completely rewritten with the intention of creating a rule that preserves the intent and spirit of the old rule, but is better suited to products resulting from new technology.

Under the new rule, bats with composite handles and tapers would still be legal. The stricter language applies primarily to the barrel of the bat.

“While the handles and taper are important components of the bat,” Hopkins said, “the area that we recognized as more susceptible to abuse is the barrel.”

Other rules changes this year aim at increasing convenience for coaches and umpires by simplifying the substitution policy and clarifying several rules.

Rule 1-1-2 now requires coaches to list all known substitutes on the lineup card before the umpire accepts it. Coaches will still be able to add a substitute without a penalty, but this should speed up substitutions and player changes during the game.

A change to Rule 2-16-2 was also made to clarify an existing rule and ease its application for coaches and players. The rule now reads: “A foul tip is a batted ball that goes directly to the catcher’s hands and is legally caught by the catcher. It is a strike and the ball is in play.”

Similarly, a “last-time-by” rule has been instituted. The new rule states that if a runner correctly touches a base that was missed the last time he was by the base, that last touch corrects any previous base-running infraction. This last-time-by practice is commonly accepted, but is now legally Rule 8-2-6l.

The last two rules changes were approved on recommendation from the NFHS Sports Medicine Advisory Committee. First, in a change to Rule 1-5-8, all hard and unyielding items such as braces, casts, etc., must be padded with a closed-cell, slow-recovery foam padding no less than one-half-inch thick. Knee and ankle braces that are unaltered from the manufacturer’s original design/production do not require additional padding.

Second is an update to concussion language that has been added to the rules for all high school sports. The new rule, 3-1-5, puts strict constraints on players who may have suffered a concussion. The rule states that any player who exhibits signs, symptoms or behaviors consistent with a concussion, including but not limited to loss of consciousness, headache, dizziness, confusion of balance problems, must be removed from the contest immediately and shall not return to play before being cleared by an appropriate health-care professional.

A complete listing of all rules changes approved by the committee is available on the NFHS Web site at www.nfhs.org. Click on “Athletics & Fine Arts Activities” on the home page, and select “Baseball.”

Baseball is the fourth-most popular sport for boys at the high school level, according to the 2008-09 NFHS Athletics Participation Survey, with 473,184 participants nationwide. The sport ranks third in school sponsorship with 15,699 schools sponsoring the sport.
